The Brigade In The Community

The Sassafras-Ferny Creek Fire Brigade has been a pivotal organisation in our small community for more than 75 years.

Community Fireguard

Community Fireguard is a program aimed at assisting local residents to better prepare for the risk of bushfires in their immediate vicinity. Around 20 Community Fireguard groups exist within the brigade area. These enjoy the support of both the CFA North East Community Safety team and the local brigade. More info »


Community Fireguard (CFG)* 



A behaviour change program that assists small community groups  to build knowledge, networks and capacity to prepare for, respond  to and recover fromfire through a series of meetings.

Bushfire safety meetings are held in the local area every summer. Everyone is welcome to attend. Meeting schedules »


Early Fire Safe (EFS)* 


A practical 60 minute session for parents and carers on home fire  safety and prevention of burn and scald injuries in children. 


Property Advice Visit Service (PAVS) 


Trained volunteer brigade members door knock high-risk local  homes (identified through VFRR data) and deliver a 15-minute  awareness-raising program leaving relevant publications and  planning templates. 


Bushfire Safety for Workers (BSW)* 


Face-to-face delivery of group based session for people who work  and travel in high bushfire risk areas, covering how to stay safe on  the road. 


Reduce the Risk 


Practical 60-90 minute  TARGETED FIRE SAFETY PROGRAMS 


Smoke Alarm Installation program 


Trained brigade members (and sometimes CLBEs) install  residential smoke alarms in their area safely and compliantly. 


Bushfire/Grass Fire Planning Workshop* 


Face-to-face or online facilitated 90-120 minute community  workshop to assistpeople to develop their bushfire or grassfire  survival plan. 

Fire Safe Kids

The brigade makes regular visits to local schools. Trained facilitators engage with students through the Fire Safe Kids program. This structured program offers primary-age children learnings about fire safety in line with the school curriculum.


Fire Safe Kids (FSK) 


Series of lesson plans on basic fire safety for primary schools and  early learning centres, delivered by accredited CFA members. 





Ferny Creek Bushfire Alert Sirens

During the Fire Danger Period, a system of three additional community warning sirens operate for residents in the One Tree Hill area. For more information contact the brigade secretary.

Carols on the Mountain

Since 2005, the brigade has hosted Carols on the Mountain, an event aimed at drawing our community closer together and to celebrate Christmas and the holiday season. In 2006, more than 1200 people attended the event, which has remained popular with locals ever since.


Links with other local organizations

Other community groups are welcome to make use of the fire station facilities for meetings and other events. A range of groups, including conservation, sporting, school and civic organisations, already use our facilities. For more information, email the Captain.
